LE SUEUR, Minn. — University of Minnesota Extension will host a Beef Cattle and Pasture Management Meeting on Thursday, March 22nd at the Genesis main office building, located at 901 N. 4th St. in Le Sueur, Minnesota. This new event will equip beef producers with information to help their operations succeed, focusing on cattle nutrition and pasture management. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10:00 a.m. There is a cost of $15 per person at the door.
A diverse lineup of speakers will address various aspects of cattle nutrition and pasture management. Elyssa Trejo, Dow AgroSciences Range and Pasture Specialist, will discuss techniques to help with weed control in your pasture such as weed identification, application rates and techniques, calibration, and application timing. Grant Crawford, PhD and Manager of Beef Technical Services at Merck Animal Health, will speak about cow and calf nutrition for fall and winter calving. Dan Mahoney of Sibley County Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Steve Breaker of Le Sueur Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will inform attendees about programs their agencies offer, such as disaster assistance, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), and guaranteed owner/operator loans.
Following lunch, Lance Smith and Gary Watson, NRCS Grazing Specialists, will discuss planting and management practices to improve pasture grazing quality. Then Shane Bugeja, University of Minnesota Extension Educator, will provide tips for managing soil health and nutrition on your pasture. All told, this information will give you a big-picture idea of what your cattle nutrition and pasture management could look like, and enlighten you about resources to get you there.
