WASHINGTON, N.C. — If you are interested in horticulture and like giving back to your community, this program is for you! The Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers (EMGVs) work through the local Cooperative Extension Centers to bring unbiased, research-based knowledge to the community. EMGVs diagnose plant problems, speak at local schools and civic centers, teach local gardeners, and maintain the Extension Teaching Garden. EMGVs receive 40 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction and complete a 40-hour internship to become a Certified Master Gardener volunteer.
Extension Master Gardener volunteers give so much back to both our local community and the entire state of North Carolina. Their volunteer help and instruction accounted for 210,781 hours in 2018, the equivalent of 101 full-time positions were added to N.C. Cooperative Extension as a result! This is an amazing program that offers the opportunity of life-long learning while giving back to the local community to make our world a better place! Here in Beaufort County, EMGVs volunteered a total of 1,497 hours and reached out to over 400 residents.
