EAST LANSING, Mich. — Researchers from the Michigan State University Malting Barley Research Program are offering field days to showcase the research surrounding malting barley and provide networking opportunities for farmers, industry professionals or those who are interested in the subject matter. Two separate field days will be held to accommodate stakeholders in different regions of the state. Those interested in malting barley, malt production and the growth of the industry in Michigan are encouraged to attend one or both field days. Information specific to each field day and registration is provided below.
Field days will be held at the following locations.
MSU W.K. Kellogg Biological Station Field Day on June 20
Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Event address: 9702 N 40th St., Hickory Corners, MI 49060
This field day will feature guided tours of the research plots that include winter and spring variety and management trials. Additionally, speakers from the seed, malting, distilling and production industries will offer their insights and perspectives on malting barley in Michigan. Brook Wilke, farm manager at MSU Kellogg Biological Station, will present on the past, current and potential research surrounding malting barley. A free networking lunch will be provided to registered attendees.
Thumb Region Field Day on June 27
Time: 5 p.m.-7 p.m.
Event address: 804 Wetters Road, Kawkawlin, MI 48631
This event will feature winter malting barley variety and performance trials evaluating over 30 varieties at the Don Shelagowski Farm. Speakers will include professionals from the seed, malting, distilling and production industries. Dr. Dean Baas will present on the past, current, and potential research surrounding malting barley. A free networking meal will also be provided to registered attendees.
