ST. CLOUD, Minn. — University of Minnesota Extension will be holding a workshop next month for area backyard keepers and small flock poultry producers. This is a great opportunity to learn about the issues that poultry birds face; predators, pests and disease can greatly impact small flocks. Join UMN experts to review some of the challenges and solutions for small-scale and backyard poultry. This workshop is designed for beginning chicken keepers in urban and rural settings, but experienced bird keepers will find the workshop helpful as well.
Topics to be covered at the workshop include: Pest and predator control, avian anatomy and physiology, disease identification and response, and occasional issues associated with keeping birds such as cannibalism, cloacal prolapse, broken wing or leg, frostbite, moldy feed, ascites, and hens not laying. Speakers include a variety of experts and specialists from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Animal Science, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Veterinary Public Health and Preventative Medicine, and Extension.
The Backyard and Small Flock Poultry Workshop will be held March 2 from 9:30am-3:30pm at the St. Cloud Regional Extension Office, 3601 18th St S, Suite 113, St. Cloud, MN. Cost for the workshop is $10 per person or $20 per household (up to 3 people). To pre-register, contact Emily Wilmes at 320-255-6169, ext. 3 or krek0033@umn.edu. Please pre-register by February 25.
