COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the 24th annual Wheatheart Wheat Conference on Aug. 11 at the Ochiltree County Expo Center, 402 Expo Drive in Perryton.

Those attending the event will hear educational topics related to wheat marketing, variety selection and management practices, and updates on wheat forage, said Scott Strawn, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Ochiltree County.

“The 2022 wheat crop growing season was tough in our area because of the extreme dry conditions from planting all the way to harvest,” Strawn said. “Over half the planted acres were not harvested and the yields were below average on the harvested acres.”

The bright spot, he said, was the price level. With the price still holding strong, there is optimism for planting wheat for next year, he said.

“With the current dry conditions, many of the cow-calf producers are looking for alternatives to feed their cows and calves to avoid selling them,” Strawn said. “With these current conditions, hopefully some of the information provided at this meeting will be useful to both the farmers and cattlemen in attendance.”

Get registered

Registration is $10 at the door beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the program from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Lunch and a drawing for a $100 gift card will be sponsored by Texas Wheat Producers.

One general Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education unit will be offered to pesticide applicators.

On the agenda

The following topics will be addressed:

– Wheat Market Outlook and Marketing Strategies, Mark Welch, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist-grain marketing in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Bryan-College Station.

– Utilizing Wheat Resources in Cow-Calf Operations, Jason Smith, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist in the Department of Animal Science, Amarillo.

– Variety Selection and Management for High Grain and Forage Yields, Jourdan Bell, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Amarillo.

– Update from Texas Wheat Producers Board and Association, Darby Campsey, Texas Wheat Producers director of communications and producer relations, Amarillo.

– Rainfall Insurance for Wheat Forage—The Basics, Jason Schickedanz, Broken Arrow Crop Insurance, Perryton.
