CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. — Buy art, save farms – that is what your purchase at Landscapes for Landsake will do. Since 1990 the Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) has worked to accomplish a singular mission: protect the farms and forests, rich soils and agricultural landscape in Washington and Rensselaer counties for future generations. In that time, ASA has managed to conserve over 26,000 acres on 150 farms. For the last 19 years, a significant source of funding has come from Landscapes for Landsake Art Sale and Exhibition, a celebration of the land by our community of local artists.
Landscapes for Landsake is the region’s largest art buying event of the season and ASA’s largest fundraiser of the year. Participating artists generously donate 50% of their proceeds to support ASA’s farmland conservation work. This year’s exhibition features the work of 58 artists. Approximately 180 works of art will be displayed in the barn at Maple Ridge and over 600 works will be available on www.LandscapesforLandsake.com. Many of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work on the Columbus Day weekend event.
The in-person sale opens on Saturday, October 9th from 12 to 5 p.m. in the historic barn at Maple Ridge (172 State Route 372 in Cambridge). Admission is a $10 suggested donation. ASA will be limiting the number of people allowed in the barn at a time. Reserve a time slot with an advanced ticket at https://bit.ly/3z0wdf7. The gallery is also open from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 10th. Masks will be required in the barn for all visitors. For the health and safety of all, there will be no food or beverages served this year.
The online sale will be available October 10-30 on www.LandscapesforLandsake.com. The website features elegantly designed collections from each artist, bios, videos and so much more, accessible from the comfort of your home.
This year’s featured artist is Takeyce Walter of Round Lake. Her work embodies the beauty of the world she sees from her easel, and lucky for us, it’s right in our own backyards. She is inspired by her love of the landscape and her passion for vibrant colors. She works in both oils and pastels. Her painting, “Passing Storm” is highlighted on posters and postcards throughout the region, as well as at Maple Ridge. “Passing Storm was chosen as the featured work because it exemplifies the spirit of the show. Takeyce has an innate ability to take the ordinary and make it feel magical,” said Leah McCloskey, curator of the show.
Renee Bouplon, ASA’s incoming Executive Director, explains “This event celebrates the connection between the art and the landscapes we are working to protect. It’s what makes Landscapes for Landsake so special. The success of this event has had a tremendous impact on ASA’s ability to protect local farms.”
The exhibit is curated by Leah McCloskey, a resident of Salem, NY and active supporter of local farmers. Leah is the Administrative Coordinator for the Artists Fellowship and former director of Exhibition Outreach at the Art Students League of New York. Leah’s creativity and eye for beauty are bound to make ASA’s exhibition a tremendous success again this year. “There really is no other venue in the region that has all of these incredibly talented artists in one place at one time. It’s an art event not to be missed”.
