PUEBLO, Colo. — The Greater Pueblo Chamber and The Visit Pueblo Convention is happy to announce the 27th Annual Chile & Frijoles Festival on September 24-26, 2021 is being planned at full force. After last year’s Throwback Festival with limited attendance, this full scale annual chile harvest is a welcomed celebration. Every year, thousands pay homage to Pueblo’s best-loved crop: green chilies, particularly Pueblo Chile. The event features live entertainment, street vendors, cooking competitions, farmers market, mariachis and chilies, chilies, chilies! Held in Pueblo’s historic downtown on Union Avenue, the festival draws Pueblo residents as well as people from across the state and around the nation.
The Greater Pueblo Chamber is actively accepting vendor and entertainment applications. There will also be several events taking place within the Chile & Frijoles Festival. Keep an eye out for our Chihuahua Parade, Jalapeno Eating Contest and Chili & Salsa Showdown! All applications and events are available for pre-registration online at: pueblochilefestival.com.
Our Chile & Frijoles Festival also tends to spark our green chile competition with Hatch, New Mexico chile. The Greater Pueblo Chamber and The Visit Pueblo Convention & Visitor’s Bureau are here to help guide you in the superior chile direction! We like to consider ourselves chile aficionados. We maintain a tight knit relationship with our local Pueblo Chile Growers Association. The Pueblo Chile Growers association is a group of farmers in Pueblo, Colorado that grow Authentic Pueblo Chile. Due to our region’s growing conditions, nutrient rich soils and pure Colorado water, our farmers are able to yield some of the hottest and most flavorful chilies. It’s pungency ranges between 5,000 and 20,000 Scoville Heat Units!
Now that we have your attention, let’s get down to the ‘nitty-gritty.’ Why is Pueblo Chile the superior green chile? The answer to this question comes down to the Flavor and Care of our beloved crop. Pueblo Chile is consistently bolder in flavor as well as maintaining a meatier texture due to our altitude. This allows for a better roast than Hatch, NM Chile which tends to be a thinner and can easily burn in the roasting process. We also like to maintain our more exclusive status in comparison to the Hatch, New Mexico Chile. We are not mass produced, and we feel it shows in our chile quality. Our farmers call Pueblo Chile’s “MiraSol” because they grow facing up to the sun. A true sign of a healthy and happy plant.
