ATHENS, Pa. — Agri-Services Agency (ASA) Regional Sales Manager Mike Hess covers the Southwest Region for ASA, which comprises Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona, Southern California, Southwest Kansas, Louisiana. Hess joined ASA in 2016, and is based out of Lubbock, Texas. “I have an office in Clovis, New Mexico, but I do a lot of work from home when I’m not on the road,” said Hess. “I grew up on a cotton farm in Snyder Texas, I was always helping out on the farm. When I wasn’t working with my Grandfather on our farm, we were helping people on the farms around us. I like working for Agri-Services Agency because thy help people too, and that fits what I want to do in life.”
As a regional sales manager, Hess says “I don’t manage other employees, but I do manage a very large territory and a lot of different customer accounts, mainly based in dairy or feed lots, but really I work with all types of agri-businesses. I mainly focus on property, casualty, workers compensation and on the farm packages. My co-worker in the region, Bryan Martin, focuses on health insurance, we work together all the time to provide complete insurance programs to our customers.”
Over the years, Hess has worn many hats in life, from working as a professional golfer, managing golf courses, and doing sales for fertilizer companies before settling into to insurance at ASA. “I love traveling, it’s what I’ve always done,” said Hess. “It’s nice to have somewhere new to go to work. But the best part of ASA is the family atmosphere, and the fact we’re helping others. I know that when I need help, my ASA family will be there for me, that’s how I know we’ll always be there for our customers. It feels like working on the farm, that sense of family here.”
For farms and other agribusinesses, Hess feels that Agri-Services Agency offers more than its competitors. “Agriculture insurance is what we do, and we’re experts in that,” said Hess. “I run into other companies that don’t have our focus, and a lot of times they’re just someone trying to sell anything they can. Most of us at ASA grew up on our own a farm or ranch. We’re a part of the industry, and we care about our industry.”
For Hess, one of the keys of insurance is providing for the future. “It’s about protecting your legacy and making sure your kids are taken care of if something happens to the to your business or to you,” said Hess. “I’ve seen too many times where people don’t have coverage, and then a disaster like a tornado comes through and wipes the place out and the family has nothing. It’s about protecting your family and your legacy from debt. I look at property and casualty insurance from a business standpoint because of my background. You put insurance on your place, and if you build that cost into your business plan, you won’t even see it in your day to day life. You can focus on making money, growing your business and you know that you and your family are taken care of.”
