COLUMBIA, S.C.–On March 5, join us and local food system leaders across the state as we discuss the potential for food hubs in South Carolina. Our keynote speaker will be Gary Matteson, Farm Credit Council & Vice President Young, Beginning and Small Farmers Programs. Presenters will be Jim Matson of Matson Consulting in Aiken, SC who is an expert on food hubs in the U.S. and Jim Barham who is a food systems specialist and agriculture economist with the USDA Rural Development and local food hub leaders from around SC who will report on their work.
The workshop will focus on:
Food Hub Definition and Functions • Business Organization and Business Models Membership Structures • Basic Business Operations • Farmers and Producers Food Safety Certifications • Financial Viability
At the conclusion of the presentations, there will be break-out sessions into regional discussion groups.

March 6th 2018 join us as we continue the conversation about South Carolina Food Hubs specific to the Midlands region. Part One of the event, March 5th, will be a statewide Food Hub conversation featuring food systems experts Jim Matson of Matson Consulting, Jim Barham agriculture economist with USDA Rural Development, and Gary Matteson, Farm Credit Council & Vice President Young, Beginning and Small Farmers Programs. These colleagues will be part of the discussion on March 6th as well.
The session will be for Midlands region attendees and will be a facilitated discussion about what may be useful for our local food system proponents, what infrastructure is currently in place and what is needed.
We hope to come out of this session with a path forward for the Midlands to create a local food system.
