COLUMBIA CO., N.Y. — Kids in grades 1-5 who live in Columbia and Greene Counties will be able to experience hands-on activities in their communities, presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H educators. Library and summer recreation programs selected the program theme they are offering, with each providing six hours of excitement for up to twelve children. By working with small groups each child is given the opportunity to have their hands in the action.
To register, please contact the site coordinator indicated for each location. Questions? Contact Linda Tripp, 4-H Issue Leader, at 518-318-1193.
Digging Up the Past: Archaeology
Archaeology is a scientific discipline where archaeologists attempt to learn about the past through the objects left behind by past groups of people. In this workshop, youth learn about what archaeology is and what archaeologists do through hands-on activities. They will participate in a simulated dig and analyze the artifacts they find. They will learn about the importance of not only understanding the past, but preserving it for future understanding.

Wonderful World of Water
Youth will explore all the wonderful benefits we get from water. They will dive into unlocking the secrets to our world’s greatest natural resource and learn how to protect and create awareness of just how important water is to every living organism on this planet. Through hands-on activities and lessons such as oil spill cleanup, the adventures of “Robo Cow”, and “Do fish really live in that?,” our local youth will become the masters of H20.

The Great World of Nature
Youth will spend time getting to know the outdoors. Even tiny backyards can be filled with plenty of living things. We use observation and games as a way for youth to gain an understanding of how the natural world works. From leaf printing to scavenger hunts to games about the plants and animals in our backyard, kids have an exciting chance to explore the outdoors and learn about the importance of our environment.
