JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Five outstanding 4-H dairy members represented Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program by participating in the Western District Dairy Quiz Bowl competition at Pioneer Middle School in Delevan, NY on Saturday, March 11th, 2017.
Dairy Bowl is a quiz bowl where the youth answer questions related to dairy cattle and the dairy industry, as individuals and as a team and are recognized on their placings. The primary objective of the 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest is to provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to demonstrate their knowledge of dairy related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Dairy Bowl is an educational experience for both participants and spectators.

Our novice team of Collin Gregory, Cherry Creek Cornhuskers 4-H Club; Trent Ivett, Cherry Creek Cornhuskers 4-H Club; and Dayne Jantzi, Clymer Eager Beavers 4-H Club, went undefeated to take first place in their division, earning bonus points in every match they played, meaning that all three team members contributed to their decisive wins.
Honors were also given in each division to the top ten individual placings. These were determined by the number of points each 4-H member earned overall and included all of the participants in the entire event. In the novice division, all three members of the team earned this honor. Dayne Jantzi placed 10th, Trent Ivett placed 5th, and Collin Gregory received 4th place, securing Trent and Collin a spot on the team that will be competing at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY this August 2017. What great teamwork, respect, and support these three young men demonstrated!
In the junior division, Miranda Nickerson earned a very prestigious placing, as she stood 4th out of the top ten. This honor locked up a place on the Western District Team for her. This team will compete at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY on April 29th for the privilege to sit on the New York State Dairy Bowl Team.
Congratulations to all of our participants this year. Your enthusiasm, comradery, and dedication to learning all of the facts for such challenging questions concerning the dairy industry are something of which to be very proud. The future looks bright! Thanks for representing Chautauqua County 4-H in such an exceptional manner.
