WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The 4-H Livestock Auction returns to Jefferson County in 2020. The 4-H Livestock Auction last took place at the Jefferson County Fair in 2007 due to a dwindling number of participating youth and buyers. However, in 2019 4-H families showed a significant interest in bringing the 4-H Livestock Auction back. There is also interest being shown from the local FFA school programs.
The 4-H Livestock Auction is the culmination of 4-H livestock members’ efforts – when the animals they have raised are sold to the public. It is the last step in their project where the educational marketing aspects come to life. Through the 4-H Livestock Program, youth gain skills in raising, showing and marketing livestock. In the process, they learn record keeping, responsibility, financial accountability, and animal care . . . fundamental skills that last a lifetime!
The livestock auction is open to the general public – businesses and individuals to come and bid on the purchase of an animal. Two or more individuals can also go together to purchase an animal by splitting the purchase price. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and excitement of the 4-H Livestock Auction this summer on July 11th starting at 12pm at the Jefferson County Agricultural Fair!
Youth will need to start raising their animals in the beginning of the 2020 year. This year the auction will include beef cattle, meat goats, sheep and swine. To learn more about this program there is an informational meeting taking place for youth and their guardian(s) on January 23, 2020 at 6:30pm at Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County located on 230 North Hamilton Street Watertown, New York. Youth and their guardian(s) are welcome to attend to learn more.
