WASHINGTON CO., N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program is hosting a youth Tractor Safety Course March 30, April 2 and April 3 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Transportation will be provide for youth from Columbia and Greene Counties for this three-day course. The course is designed for youth 14 (13 year olds must turn 14 by April 3) and 15 years of age but youth up to the age of 19 will also be accepted. A mandatory registration meeting for parents and youth will be held on Monday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Education Center, 479 Rt. 66, Hudson. Youth and parents will be given all pre-program homework, expectations, and requirements for the certificate program.
The National Safe Tractor & Machinery Operation Program and ATV Safety Workshop educates participants about: risks of farm related activities, how to act safely in different farm work settings, identifying and correcting farm hazards to prevent injuries and illnesses, and how to obtain safety information about equipment that they may be operating.
Youth 14 and 15 years old are required to have a Tractor and Machinery Operation Certificate when employed on farms and other agribusinesses that require operating equipment. Youth younger than 14 and working on the family farm or older than 15 are not required to take this course. All youth will receive a National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program (NSTMOP) certificate after they pass the written and tractor operation tests taking place the last day of the course. The fee is $30.00 for enrolled 4-H members and $35 for non-members.
