OTSEGO CO., N.Y. — The 4-H Earn-an-Animal Program gives youth the opportunity to raise and show an animal. The daily responsibility of caring for an animal allows youth to learn important life and science skills used to complete the 4-H livestock project. Animal species in the 4-H Earn-an-Animal Program include: beef and dairy calves, dairy and meat goats, poultry, swine, sheep, and rabbits.
All Otsego County youth, ages 8-19 are encouraged to apply for a 4-H Earn-an-Animal. Unaffiliated youth awarded funds to purchase animals will be enrolled as 4-H members. A 4-H member may be awarded two animals in two different species. Youth must complete an application, be interviewed, and formally agree to the project requirements. Applications are due January 1 and can be obtained from the 4-H office or on the web at http://cceschoharie-otsego.org/resources/4-h-earn-an-animal-application-otsego
For more information contact the 4-H office at 607-547-2536 X225.
How is this program possible? Generous financial donations of past recipients, area businesses, and individuals support this 4-H program.
Youth are expected to be the primary caregiver for the project animal(s)venture. Animals are to be shown at the Otsego County Fair and/or The Farmers’ Museum Junior Livestock Show. Show requirements vary by species. Agreements with the award winners will specify the details. Youth will work with a mentor to find and purchase an animal. A dollar amount will be allocated for the purchase. With a receipt, the youth will be reimbursed for the agreed amount. In some cases, the family may have to help cover the cost.
Accommodations for persons with special needs may be requested by contacting Cornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie and Otsego Counties prior to a program.
