CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — This year’s upcoming Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention promises lots of education packed into three short days. With morning and afternoon sessions held from January 31 to February 2, attendees can learn about new varieties, management of insect, disease, and weed issues, fertility recommendations, environmental regulations, pesticide safety, and other topics for a wide range of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental crops. Other sessions will include farm labor, business development, organic production, soil health and cover crops, and high tunnel production. Wednesday February 1 will include morning and afternoon sessions offered in Spanish on tree fruit grafting, blueberry pruning, pest and pollinator management of fruit and vegetable crops, and worker safety. Many of the sessions will enable participants who are licensed pesticide applicators in Pennsylvania to earn category and core recertification credits.
There will be a keynote presentation Tuesday morning and social functions for attendees to enjoy, including a Tuesday evening banquet and Wednesday evening ice cream social. This year’s keynote speaker is Michael Kilpatrick, host of the Thriving Farmer podcast and Thriving Farmer summit series. He will present on “Thriving in Uncertain Times,” a topic that’s likely relevant for many of us as we navigate weather, economic, and other changes in farming.
In addition to the three-day convention, there is also the opportunity to register for pre-convention workshops on Monday January 30 including greenhouse vegetable production, farm transition plans, managing a farm market bakery, or tree pruning. Additional workshop options include trainings on FSMA, spotted lanternfly permits, or acquiring a Pennsylvania pesticide applicator license. You could even sign up for the annual bus tour of local agriculture, also held on Monday. This year’s tour will visit five tree fruit, farm market, greenhouse, and nursery stops throughout Adams County.
Whatever crops you’re growing, you’re sure to find sessions that you can learn from. For more information about the convention or to register, visit https://www.mafvc.org or call (717) 694-3596 for more information.
