ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Minnesota Extension Beef Team and the Minnesota Cattlemen’s Association will host the 2022 Minnesota Cattlemen’s Summer Tour on Tuesday, July 12. The tour will feature many stops, including the UMN Andrew Boss Laboratory of Meat Science, UMN College of Veterinary Medicine, UMN Forage Research Plots, and a visit to the Minnesota Zoo.

Stops on the tour:

  • UMN Andrew Boss Laboratory of Meat Science: hanging carcass evaluation, cutting demos
  • UMN College of Veterinary Medicine: Leatherdale Equine Center, UMN Vet School Tradeshow
  • UMN Forage Research plots: 30 different forage species, research plot machinery hill
  • The tour wraps up with a visit to the Minnesota Zoo where attendees will have exclusive access to the entire zoo from 4 to 8 p.m.

At the Forage Research Plots, Extension Educators Troy Salzer and David Nicolai will be joined by forage agronomist Margaret Smith of Albert Lea Seeds to discuss the forages planted this year. They have planted 30 species of forages to highlight different characteristics of the plants – including identifying features, agronomic recommendations, forage quality, and uses.

The goals of the SPS workshops for producers include: 1) Producers can complete the SPS plan with the least inconvenience to their schedule, 2) Participants will know how to monitor their herd for signs of FMD, CSF, and ASF, 3) Producers will go home with their own SPS plan in hand, and Minnesota swine producers will be ready with a functional disease response plan when a disease outbreak occurs.
