WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Every year youth in Jefferson County test their dairy knowledge by competing against other counties in the North Country 4-H Regional Dairy Bowl during the month of March. The 4-H Dairy Bowl is a quiz bowl style competition that tests knowledge of dairy cows and the dairy industry in a friendly, fun competition. Youth ages 8+ can participate in 4-H Dairy Bowl, and it is not necessary to own cows or live on a farm to participate. It also does not matter if you are currently enrolled in Jefferson County 4-H. Enrollment is free in Jefferson County and can be completed once you sign up for the program.
There are three divisions: Beginner, Junior, and Senior, allowing youth of all experience levels the opportunity to participate in a comfortable environment. The top four contestants from the Regional Competition continue on to compete at the New York State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl held at Cornell University. Jefferson County previously has excelled at the NYS 4-H State level. Practices for 4-H Dairy Bowl takes place weekly leading up to the competition starting on January 19, 2022. It is important to attend as many practices as possible, and even to practice on your own. CCE Dairy and Livestock Specialist and former 4-H Dairy Bowl contestant Abbey Jantzi reflected back on her experience, saying “As a 4-H’er, I enjoyed participating in dairy bowl and testing my knowledge. When I started college, I already knew some of the concepts being taught in my dairy-specific courses due to my involvement in 4-H and dairy bowl. Now as a professional working in the agriculture industry, I recognize that 4-H dairy bowl provides youth with an excellent opportunity to learn about dairy cattle, meet other youth that share their interests, and start forming good study and learning habits before they reach middle/high school or college.”
Beginning January 19, 2022- Jefferson County 4-H Dairy Club members attend weekly practices to prepare for the North Country Regional Dairy Bowl. These practices feature guest presentations from local experts in the dairy industry. Topics of these presentations include calf care, nutrition, health, and reproduction. Presenters include CCE staff, veterinarians, professors, dairy nutritionists, and farmers. While attending presentations and working on practice questions, 4-H members make new friends and build a sense of community as they work together to learn more about the dairy industry. 4-H Dairy Bowl practices will be held on 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 3/2, and 3/9 from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County office in Watertown. The 2022 North Country Regional Dairy Bowl will be held on March 12th.
