RALEIGH, N.C. — N.C. State Professor and Extension Horticultural Science Vegetable Specialist, Jonathan Schultheis, and Research Technician, Stuart Michel, conduct annual cultigen evaluations on cucurbits like pumpkins, watermelons, orange flesh melons, and zucchini squash. With the assistance of Area Specialized Agent, Erin Eure, and with cooperation and assistance of Fred Smith and A. J. Smith and Sons Farm in Edenton, NC, 18 pumpkin cultigens were evaluated in a replicated study for yield and quality. 8 specialty pumpkin cultivars were also evaluated in observational plots. An objective of our cucurbit evaluations is to identify adapted cultivars that NC growers can grow profitably.
The 2021 Eastern North Carolina Pumpkin Cultigen Evaluation Study was conducted at A. J. Smith and Sons Farm in Edenton, NC. Visit the Cucurbit Cultivar Evaluations & Variety Trials page to view field studies on pumpkins, melons, and squash from previous years.
