HOLTWOOD, Pa. — 2019 was a whirlwind in the world of hemp. From planting, growing, harvesting, processing and more, the industry was booming. Shifts were constant as everyone was learning and experiencing the same things from different perspectives. Uncertainty currently abounds as most farmers still have not been paid for the 2019 crop. But the product is starting to move, and clarity for 2020 is beginning to focus.
Some of the top minds are gathering to sort out the realities and opportunities that this year may have to offer in growing hemp. The meeting will take place on Thursday, January 16th, 2020, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the Lancaster County Farm & Home Center 1383 Arcadia Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. (Registration begins at 7:30 am) Practical tips and advice will be given from experienced farmers- focusing on information needed to effectively grow hemp in 2020. From selecting the right seeds, planning for harvest, processing, extraction, and perhaps most importantly, the most up-to-date legal requirements from the PA Deputy Secretary PA of Agriculture, Fred Strathmeyer. National Hemp Council member Erica McBride Stark will share her big-picture perspective as it relates on what to expect in regards to growing hemp in 2020.
“I’m very aware that many farmers are still on the fence on whether or not to plant this year”, says Steve Groff, coordinator of the event and founder of Hemp Innovators. “And that’s one of the reasons we want to help farmers make an informed decision.”
One of the more notable pieces of equipment that will be at this event is a highly customized John Deere 9600 combine that can process 5,000 hemp plants per hour! If the weather is cooperative, they plan to demonstrate the time and labor-saving innovation that Steve, his son David, and Peter Hughes of Red Barn Consulting crafted.
The fast paced and packed agenda will offer 15 topics. 18 hemp related exhibitors have signed up to be a part of the event. Steve will also be unveiling his Hemp Innovator School where practical online education will dig deeply into the most current and relevant issues of growing and producing CBD Hemp. Groff, well known among farmers for his passion in promoting cover crops and soil health practices, sums up this new venture by saying, “My desire is to foster a network of those interested in hemp and learn how to navigate the challenges and opportunity together”.
