MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County is hosting a three-day Master Food Preserver Certification training. Participants need no prior knowledge of food preservation to attend, but must be available to attend the entire training, be willing to share knowledge with others, and be comfortable participating in a variety of hands-on activities.
During this intensive training, participants will learn about safe and efficient methods for all aspects of food preservation in the home including economic and nutritional considerations, food safety, canning, freezing, drying, pickling, and preparing jams and jellies.
This course is the first step toward becoming a Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Food Preserver. Upon completion of the three-day training and a passing score of 85% or higher on the final written exam you will be given a certificate of completion. To receive certification as a Master Food Preserver you will need 40 overall hours of hands-on food preservation experience with 20 of the hours being volunteer work with Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County.
Examples of volunteer work are:
- Providing information at local farmers’ markets, fairs, or community events.
- Conducting presentations and workshops as part of a team or on your own for community groups and schools.
- Preparing educational displays, writing articles for newsletters, newspapers, etc.
Once certified as a Master Food Preserver, you will be qualified not only to preserve food, but also to instruct others on food preservation methods in group and one-on-one settings.
This is a valuable asset to owners and employees of farm stands and Community Supported Agriculture as well as members of civic organizations, as you can pass your knowledge along with confidence.
The Master Food Preserver Training is limited to 21 participants and includes meals each day. Pre-test and post-test, and nightly study is required. The cost is $395 per person. Interested individuals must register with payment no later than May 6, 2019. Contact Meghan at 845-344-1234 or email@example.com for more information. No refunds; if you cannot attend please send someone in your place.
