CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. — A Stanley-Boyd FFA dairy judging team pulled off an unprecedented back-to-back-to-back title during the 2019 Chippewa County FFA Dairy Judging Contest held on October 25 at Udder Wise Dairy in Tilden. Stanley-Boyd FFA captured the title in 2017 and 2018. Forty-eight students participated representing FFA Chapters from Bloomer, Cadott, Cornell, and Stanley-Boyd.
Stanley-Boyd’s team of Jaryn Schesel, Brett Schneider, and Ryan Eslinger winning score of 570 out of 711 points was enough to edge out the Bloomer team of Rachel Culver, Skylar Vich, and Grace Dachel who racked up a team score of 558 points. Another Stanley-Boyd team of Wyatt Milas, Carsen Hause, and Cooper Nichols finished a close third with 555 points.
Each FFA Chapter in Chippewa County was invited to bring at least one four-member judging team. The top three individual scores on each team were used to determine the team score. Each team member judged four classes of dairy cows and answered ten type analysis questions on one of the dairy cow classes. Teams also participate in a dairy knowledge test and cheese taste identification as part of the contest.
Just three points separated the top five scoring individuals. Isabel LeBakken of Bloomer was the top scoring individual, tallying 199 points out of a possible 237 points. Skylar Vich also of Bloomer placed second with 197 points. Three students earning 196 points included Wyatt Milas and Jaryn Schesel of Stanley-Boyd and Holly Nesvacil of Cadott. Rounding out the top ten scorers were Brynn Zwiefelhofer, Bloomer 195 points, Elizabeth Anderson, Bloomer 194 points, Brett Schneider, Stanley-Boyd and Jada Goettl, Cornell 192 points, and Trenten Schimmel, Cadott 191 points.
Matt Nunes of Scientific Holsteins was the official judge for this year’s contest. Star Blends sponsored individual and team plaques for the top three team and individual placings. A traveling trophy for the top team is awarded. Yellowstone Cheese and Chippewa County Dairy Promoters furnished the cheese as part of the contest. Hometown Tax & Accounting Services LLC and Chippewa County Dairy Promoters provided refreshments milk and cookies for the event.
