CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. — Menomonie FFA captured first place honors in the revamped Chippewa Valley FFA Land Evaluation Contest. Traditionally, the contest involved FFA chapters from Chippewa and Eau Claire counties. Due to a weather cancellation, schools from Dunn County participated and Menomonie FFA took full advantage of the opportunity. The contest was held at the BJ Ramsier Farm near Cadott.
One-hundred students participated in the contest and final team results were based on the top three individual scores from each school. Menomonie won with an average score of 245.3 points, Boyceville placed second with 239.8, and Chippewa Falls finished third with 226.2 points. Other schools participating included Bloomer, Cadott, Cornell, and Spring Valley. Menomonie and Boyceville led the top three individual scores. Kaden Styer, Menomonie led all scorers with 262 points, Kenny Clark, Boyceville recorded 255 points, and Austin Hatfield also of Boyceville placed third with 239.5 points.
During the competition, students examined four different soil pits and the location of those pits to their immediate environment. Students examine soil type, structure, profile, slope of land, land use, classification, and fertility, and record their analyses on a scorecard. Natural Resources Conservation Service soil scientists Tim Miland and Mike England served as judges for the contest. The contest was sponsored by Chippewa County UW-Extension, Department of Land Conservation and Forest Management, Kiwanis Club of Chippewa Falls, and Compeer Financial.
