SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont slaughterhouse that officials say failed to properly stun animals before slaughter has agreed to pay the state more than $1,000.Vermont Public Radio (http://bit.ly/2uD6UAj ) reports that Vermont Packinghouse in Springfield and the Agency of Agriculture have agreed to a $1,250 payment to settle the violations.
An outside auditor will also tour the plant to recommend improvements.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture found four violations at the plant, while the state noted six.
Vermont state veterinarian Kristin Hass says the state decided to step in because of the repeated nature of the violations.
The company says it has already taken steps to prevent further violations.
